About Pop-up Opera
Exciting young opera troupe Pop-up Opera bring their new production, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore (The Elixir of Love) to The Bull, Highgate on Tuesday 31st July at 7pm.
Those who saw last year’s Don Pasquale will recall the side-splitting comedy and glorious singing. For those not in the know, Pop-up Opera is an innovative new opera company who bring opera to bars, barns, boats and all sorts of unusual and rural venues.
Founded last year by Clementine Lovell, the company’s hugely successful first production, Don Pasquale, toured venues including the cider barn, a garlic farm, a moored houseboat boat made from scrap, a restored Victorian workhouse, and a traditional English pub. Audiences ranged from apprehensive first time opera goers to seasoned opera buffs, all equally enthusiastic about what they experienced. One audience member from a Shoreham boat performance writes, ‘Our first experience of opera was surreal (given the location), absolutely engaging, a lot of fun, and one of the best things we’ve done this year. The hidden door to opera has been opened.’ One of the UK’s foremost opera publications Opera Magazine was in agreement, with a review stating ‘A performance of Don Pasquale that fulfilled its aim of making opera enjoyable and inviting, without diminishing the quality of the music.’
